National Night Out Event on Oct. 1 Aims to Build Bridges Between Police and Community

This year, the annual National Night Out event at Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­ has a new theme and a renewed commitment to uniting law enforcement and residents of southern Dallas and surrounding areas.

"Building Bridges: Police and Community – Stronger Together" will emphasize the importance of strengthening relations between community members and police officers - building bonds that increase trust, reduce tensions and make all neighborhoods safer. It will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 1 from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. Attendance is free.

"This is all about collaboration, relationship building and supporting the community, said Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­ Police Chief Christopher Shaw. "We must work in unison towards ensuring a safer community for all residents."

The recent killing of Dallas police officer will bring special significance to the gathering.  Officer Burks was at the For Oak Cliff Community Center. Members of the community he served are expected to attend, giving additional meaning to our event’s message and purpose.

"I grew up just a mile from Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­, and I’ve seen firsthand the challenges this community faces. It’s important to me that police and the community work together to create positive change," said Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­ Police Lt. Deitre Greene. "I am determined to help build a new narrative in policing because I truly believe that police and the community are stronger together."

Residents, police, businesses, elected officials and community leaders will join students, staff and faculty for an evening of activities. They will enjoy free food, music, games, entertainment, free haircuts, a car show and the company of each other. Information will be shared about community assistance programs and resources available to individuals and families in southern Dallas.

Everyone is welcome, so please join us on Tuesday, Oct. 1, from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. and help build new bridges among all members of our community, on campus and off.
